I am often confused why people cry out about personal freedoms, but in the same breath speak about making choices for others. Reproductive rights is one of the most emotional in that regard. I strongly believe that reproductive choices are among the most personal and should be left to the individual. When discussing reproductive rights with my friends, there are many who are pro-life, but realize how personal those decisions are and therefore take a pro-choice position.
Today we are experiencing serious threats by various factions who want to take away the individual rights of women to make those highly  emotional decisions. The recent Alabama Supreme Court decision that all fertilized ova are to be considered humans puts on clear display the extremes the pro-life are wiling to go to. These actions are just one aspect of how extremists want to restrict personal rights enshrined in our Constitution.
On the personal side, my late wife conceived our daughter while on birth control. So despite our precautions she conceived. Our choice was to take that pregnancy to term. But she had the choice, guaranteed by Roe v Wade and taken away by Dobbs. On the other side, I had an aunt that couldn’t get a proper abortion in her day and was scarred, preventing er from having children. Safe and proper clinical care is essential.
I am committed to ensuring the right to legal abortion remains in Oregon.
